How will generative AI impact healthcare? World Economic Forum

The UK’s National Centre for Additive Manufacturing is applying generative AI to optimize the design of medical devices such as prosthetics and implants, tailoring them to the needs of individual patients. And medtech company Implicity is using the technology to incorporate remote monitoring in pacemakers and implantable defibrillators. We also see incredible opportunities to continue growing our team, and we’re thrilled by the potential to bring aboard talented people who live further away from our hubs. In health specifically, 28% of working hours were defined as tasks with higher potential for automation (with the potential to be transformed by LLMs and requiring reduced involvement from a human worker). Eleven percent of tasks had higher potential for augmentation (requiring more human involvement). Generative AI could support applications like conversational AI to deliver personalized messages based on member health needs and preferences. Generative AI is accelerating drug discovery, improving clinical-trial planning and execution, and leading to more precision medicine therapies. It’s not something that we have known for tens of years like traditional color enhancement or sharpening algorithms. Based on text, voice analysis, image analysis, web activity and other data, the algorithms decide what the opinion is of the person towards the products and quality of services. For instance, Jacobs, an engineering company, used generative design algorithms to design a life-support backpack for NASA’s new spacesuits. The computer-generated voice is helpful to develop video voiceovers, audible clips, and narrations for companies and individuals. As IT healthcare analysts we are biased towards excitement for generative AI, but also cautious in its integration in the business at all costs, especially when we refer to healthcare organisations. It’s impossible not to be impressed, excited and terrified when you’re shown the latest technology. As well as automating tasks like note-taking, pharma and healthcare companies are experimenting with generative AI for greater efficiency in other areas of medicine, such as decision-making and diagnosis.

Improved digital communication with patients is just one way in which Generative AI is poised to transform the healthcare industry. Other potential use cases reach beyond the patient engagement to leverage language and imaging data for diagnostics and interventions. We believe AI has the potential to revolutionize some aspects of health care in areas such as medical imaging, disease diagnosis, and drug discovery. It also could take on repetitive tasks so that clinicians have more time to spend with patients. However, it is important that health care professions are mindful of trust and the ethical use of such technologies.

In Philips’s most recent state of healthcare report⁶, the company found that executives are increasingly investing in AI to alleviate the pressure health systems are facing when it comes to clinical workforce shortages. AI can help address this workforce problem by automating routine tasks, such as data entry, processing and analysis, which can free up clinicians to focus on more complex and critical tasks. Gen AI has the potential to reimagine much of the healthcare industry in ways that we have not seen to date with previously available technologies.
