Without PTH, the activation of vitamin D through the actions of PTH on the renal hydroxylase that converts 25-hydroxyvitamin D to 1,25-dihyroxyvitamin D is impaired. Patients are instructed to begin calcium supplementation while in recovery on the day of surgery and to continue at regular intervals even during the night.
